The Economic Stimulus Act of 2009 significantly expanded the scope of HIPAA requirements especially in regards to Business Associates. HITECH provisions now bring mandatory notifications, increased enforcement, and higher penalties as well as broadened responsibility for privacy.
The March Excelleration™ is offered in partnership with the law firm Cohen & Grigsby and will focus on HIPAA privacy and security issues including HIPAA best practices, pitfalls and enforcement trends, and other employment related privacy concerns surrounding the ADA, the FMLA, FCRA, hiring laws, OSHA and the Florida Drug Free Workplace Act. A large portion of this interactive discussion will focus on real life case studies. Time will be provided for a question and answer period. Detailed handouts will be available, giving you an invaluable “take-away” resource. Note that HRCI credits are pending for PHR, SPHR, GPHR.

Lisa L. Garrett, Esquire, Cohen & Grigsby. Ms. Garrett is a director in the Cohen & Grigsby Labor & Employment Group and a member of the Florida Bar. She specializes in all areas of federal and state privacy laws as they affect various employment related concerns. She received her B.A. (summa cum laude, Omicron Delta Kappa) from the University of Pittsburgh in 1991 and her J.D. with honors from the University of North Carolina School of Law in 1994.
Anne M. Lavelle, Esquire, Cohen & Grigsby. Ms. Lavelle is a director in the Cohen & Grigsby Labor & Employment Group where she concentrates her practice in HIPAA privacy and security and its impact on covered entities from both a healthcare and employment related perspective. Her BS degree was obtained from Valparaiso University in 1993 and her J.D. (magna cum laude) from Valparaiso University in 1996.
